Queen Mary

Queen Mary

I just posted a new set of photos on Flickr. They were taken yesterday during a boat tour of the Port of Long Beach. The sky added a great dramatic element, as it was dark and overcast during the tour.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/nacuff/

Photokina’s almost here

The every-other-year giant photography convention Photokina is almost here. For all the gear-head photographers out there this is a great time to watch for new product announcements and start drooling over new stuff. I’m particularly interested to see what Nikon and Canon are releasing in the prosumer DSLR space, plus mid-range HD camcorder technology. Just a couple more weeks.

We haven’t officially re-launched yet, but the web site for our Exposure photography podcast has a new URL and a new look. It has been upgraded to Wordpress 2.6.1 and is sporting a theme that I did some basic customizations to. John (my co-host) and I have started recording episodes again and will be re-launching the show next Friday, September 12th. Stay tuned!

New gadget: Canon G9

Canon G9 digital camera

I purchased a Canon G9 a couple of weeks ago and have been very happy with it. It is essentially a prosumer grade point-and-shoot digital camera. It’s about the size of a 35mm P&S, making is much larger than something like the Canon SD1000 (which is about the size of a deck of cards). However, it is a whole lot smaller and more portable than my DSLR (a Nikon D70) and so far I’ve been extremely happy with it. You can put the camera into full manual mode, which gives you control over aperture, shutter speed, etc. It’s got a macro mode, let’s you manually focus, shoots a very decent video clip, and has a hot shoe in case you want to attach a small flash. It’s certainly not for everyone, but if you’re looking for a small / portable alternative to a DSLR that gives you all the controls in a much more compact package, the Canon G9 is great. Cool Canon camera hack

Lifehacker has an interesting article on using CHDK (“Canon Hacker’s Development Kit”) to mod your Canon P&S camera to open up all sorts of interesting features. The best thing, from my initial read, is that the hack is non-destructive, doesn’t require any firmware flashing, and is accomlished simply by copying some files to the SD card. I’m planning to give it a shot this weekend.
