The Wall Street Journal reports that “In America today, there are almost as many people making their living as bloggers as there are lawyers…” I have to say I was somewhat shocked to see the statistics, which come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and claim that there are over 450,000 professional bloggers in the US. I wonder when blogger jokes are going to surpass lawyer jokes?

Sony 7506 headphones just arrived today

Sony 7506

Sony 7506

My new pair of Sony 7506 professional closed-back headphones just arrived on the FedEx truck today (BSW is a great source for pro audio gear btw). I’ve spent a couple of hours listening to them and they’re definitely a major step up from the Audio Technica ‘phones I’ve been using. They should be great for recording and podcasting (which is nominally why I bought them) but I’m really looking forward to checking out more of my iTunes catalogue with them. I’d like to get a pair of open headphones like the Sennheiser HD595’s, but from what I’ve read they’ll probably annoy everyone else in the house that’s trying to sleep. The good news about the Sony’s (and most closed-back headphones in general) is that they do a great job of of isolating sound – what you’re listening to is almost completely inaudible to everyone else, and external noises are minimized. If you’re into music and/or want to check out some hard-core audiophile info try the Head-Fi forums. Of course if you do, beware the amount of money you’ll be tempted to spend on exotic audiophile gear!

Sarah Palin from the “you’ve got to be kidding me” dept

According to a recent LA Times article, Sarah Palin believes that people and dinosaurs coexisted and that the planet is only 6000 years old. WTF?! From the article: “Soon after Sarah Palin was elected mayor of the foothill town of Wasilla, Alaska, she startled a local music teacher by insisting in casual conversation that men and dinosaurs coexisted on an Earth created 6,000 years ago — about 65 million years after scientists say most dinosaurs became extinct…

Sorry, hate to post political stuff, but really…

Thoughtful analysis of the Wall Street crisis

Harvard Business School published a very thoughtful analysis of the current Wall Street crisis in their most recent Working Knowledge newsletter. I highly recommend reading it to understand the background and the events leading up to the current situation.

Beta test for financial planning site

I’m helping a friend launch a new financial planning website. You can register for the beta test at http://pennypuddle.com/signup.php and the first ~25 users will get a free financial plan prepared. If you’d like to test out the site without sharing your real financial information just register and make up some reasonable numbers. If you decide to fudge the numbers you won’t get much help with your actual retirement planning, but you will get to play with the site and see what it’s all about.

Photokina’s almost here

Posted on September 12th, 2008 in news, photo-video | No Comments »

The every-other-year giant photography convention Photokina is almost here. For all the gear-head photographers out there this is a great time to watch for new product announcements and start drooling over new stuff. I’m particularly interested to see what Nikon and Canon are releasing in the prosumer DSLR space, plus mid-range HD camcorder technology. Just a couple more weeks.

We haven’t officially re-launched yet, but the web site for our Exposure photography podcast has a new URL and a new look. It has been upgraded to Wordpress 2.6.1 and is sporting a theme that I did some basic customizations to. John (my co-host) and I have started recording episodes again and will be re-launching the show next Friday, September 12th. Stay tuned!
