It’s surprising that this story hasn’t received more coverage – I just heard about it today on this week’s episode of TWiT. Apparently the local DSL providers are going to lose quite a bit of the leverage they’ve enjoyed with the major telcos. This is sure to have an impact on a lot of the smaller players like Linkline (my DSL provider), DSL Extreme, etc. IMHO this is very unfortunate as the smaller DSL players have done such a good job at providing superior services and flexible DSL plans. The thought of having to return to Verizon is depressing…
This has already been dugg (so you may have already seen it) but Lifehacker has a great post with their top 10 list of freeware / OSS video utilities. This list includes some utilities you can use to convert videos for playback on your ipod. Any experience with any of these? Post a comment with your favorites.

Interesting series of articles on Forbes.com about predicting the future. You should read the article by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of one of the more interesting books I’ve read recently: The Black Swan.

UPDATE: I posted an update that you might want to check out. The update was written a year after this original post and has some thoughts on the project after using the camera.
I got a CVS one-time-use video camera for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. They make for a fun hardware hacking project as there are a lot of sites on the internet with instructions for hacking them. Once you’ve completed the hack you get a re-usable, semi-disposable video camera for $30. There are a bunch of other great additional hacks you can do once you’ve unlocked the camera, like making it waterproof, etc.
It’s a fun project, but you’ll need to be comfortable soldering things together, working with open source utilities, etc. If you’ve got some free time and a penchant for that sort of thing you should give it a shot.

New pics posted to give you non-west-coast folks a sampling of the morning traffic joy in LA.
Some new pics of the 2007 Long Beach Marathon. It was held yesterday and follows part of the beach path just down the block from our house.

I just uploaded a new set of pics to Flickr. These are shots of the Port of Long Beach that were taken from the water this past August.
